This Year's SEO Checklist for On-Page, Off-Page & Technical SEO

SEO is complex and ever-changing. It’s hard to remember what needs work this month and what can be left for later. This checklist aggregates the big on-page, off-page, and technical SEO tasks and includes their prioritization, how often they need to be performed, and their associated risks. Nothing will slip through the cracks on your big tasks.

Key Takeaways

  • Optimizations of the on-page element include all the work done on your own site and, therefore, include the page titles and the page headings, the content of the page, the structure of the page, and anything else that helps users and search engines know what the page is about.
  • Optimizations of the off-page elements include all the work done off your own site. They include the links to your site from others, your site’s entries in online directories, your customer reviews, and your brand’s presence overall on the Internet.
  • Optimizations of the technical elements ensure your site is crawlable, indexable, and loads and browses quickly and safely.
  • Most of the items on this list rely on extensive research of the keywords used by your target customers.
  • The data from your analytics and your search console are the real measures of the returns on your investments.

How to Use This Checklist

Follow the four sections in this specific order. Each section builds on the previous one. The first section is on-page and tells search engines what your pages are about. The second section is about off-page work, which helps trust and authority in order for the pages to rank. The third section is technical work, which ensures no previous work was wasted. Finally, the closing section is about analytics and tells you what is working. The “Ongoing” items should be revisited on a set schedule — whether that’s monthly or quarterly. The “As needed” items should be treated as a check when new content is published or when structural changes to the site are made.

On-Page SEO

1. Domain Name Importance: Medium | Frequency: As needed

A domain name is the first thing on-page visitors and even search engines see. Use common and reliable site name types (.com or .in) and don’t rank stuff in your site name. Look at the history of sites you are buying previously spam sites will be marked as such. Ranking your domain is a long-term commitment, and in order to keep rankings, follow proper procedures when changing your domain.

2. URLs Importance: Medium | Frequency: As Needed

Every page of your website must include a valid SSL Certificate. Store your content in a logical structure. For example, yourservice.com/services/ is a logical structure. Scattering content across subdomains would be illogical. Natural language is key for a good URL. Use hyphens to separate words. Underscores and concatenated words are not as effective.

3. Keyword Research Importance: High | Frequency: Ongoing

The rest of these recommendations rely on proper keyword research. Start by putting yourself in your customers’ shoes. Construct a list based on the questions and problems your customers have. Use a keyword research tool to assess the potential of these keywords based on search volume and competition. Remove keywords with ill-fit intentions. The value of ranking for a particular keyword is not high if it leads to zero conversions. For each target keyword, define 3-5 relevant keywords that will be featured in the same text.

4. Title Tags Importance: High | Frequency: As Needed

Examine the search results for your target keyword. How do the results format and structure their title tags? Use this as inspiration for your title tag. Write a maximum of 3 title tag options containing your target keyword. Title tags are limited to 60 characters.

5. Meta Descriptions Importance: Medium | Frequency - As Needed

Check your competitors’ meta descriptions for their target keywords. Analyze whether they pose meta descriptions in the form of a question, offer a clear benefit, or give a call to action. Write your own meta description focusing on your target keyword and limiting it to about 150 characters.

6. Header Tags Importance: Medium | Frequency - As Needed

All pages should focus on a clear and logical hierarchy. Each page should have one H1 that incorporates the main target keyword for the page. H2s should incorporate the main subtopics and the H3s should be used for sections that need to be divided that are longer.

7. Content Importance: High | Frequency - Ongoing

You should start with a clear understanding of the intent of the target keyword. Create an outline that is focused on intent to help you organize your writing. Incorporate your target keywords along with any relevant keywords. Don’t forget to proofread your work. Consider using tools like Grammarly to help you spot the mistakes you may have missed.

8. Keyword Insertion Importance: High | Frequency: When Needed

Put the target keyword in the title tag and meta description and in the H1 and at least one other header. The target keyword should also be included in the first 100 words of the content. It should appear naturally in the rest of the content 3–5 times. After finishing, the content should be read as a whole to ensure that there isn’t a keyword stuffing or a robotic feel to the content.

9. Internal Links Importance: Medium | Frequency: When Needed

Use descriptive anchor text in your navigation or footer links to your most important pages. Select 3–5 internal links to direct readers to your most important pages, and make your links early in the content, not at the bottom.

10. Images Importance: Low | Frequency: When Needed

Use an efficient file format and insert descriptive, not default, file names, and compress images before uploading. Write alt text that describes the content of the image and is not a keyword.

11. UX Importance: High | Frequency: Ongoing

You need to check mobile site performance, not just how your site looks on desktop. Use heatmaps and recordings to see where visitors drop off, and check your color contrast to ensure text is readable.

Off-Page SEO

12. Backlinks Importance: High | Frequency: Ongoing

Create original research and data, expert insights, and specialized original content, which can be a reference for other sites and attract backlinks. It’s better to have a small number of high-quality backlinks rather than a large number of low-quality backlinks. Consider making free tools, calculators, or resources to attract backlinks without outreach. Find broken-link opportunities on relevant sites and replace the broken content with your original work.

13. Online Directory Listings Importance: Medium | Frequency: Ongoing

Complete and verify your Google Business Profile and Bing Places. Claim and verify other listings in your industry. Thoroughly maintain your listings and ensure your directory listings have the same contact information. Keep your business listings updated with new operating hours and offers.

14. Online Reviews and Ratings Importance: Medium | Frequency: Ongoing

To harvest positive reviews, offer a review link directly after purchase or service. Frequently monitor new reviews and respond to all reviews. Personalize your response to the review. Avoid stock responses.

15. Social Signals Importance: Low | Frequency: When Necessary

Make profiles only where your audience is active. Avoid being everywhere or spreading your profile over numerous platforms. Keep your business information the same on all profiles. Use the audience-specific updates and edits. Respond to all feedback and do not leave any engagement, especially comments or messages. Your reach will also benefit from collaboration with local creators.

16. Brand Signals Importance: Medium | Frequency: Always

Keep track of all the articles or pieces that mention your brand or the work that you do. Look to have your work or brand featured in articles or announcements that report on the news. Consider having your own online or in-person events that bring recognition to your work or brand. Offer your answers to people in forums or other online spaces and look to do collaborative projects that will be a benefit to both you and the other business.

Technical SEO

17. Website Architecture Importance: High | Frequency: When Necessary

Organize the different types of content that you have on your website in logical groupings or folders. Write the URLs clearly and add only the necessary information, i.e., a blog, product list, etc. Link related pages to your website so that visitors and search engine crawlers can easily navigate your site. Consistently check your own website to catch smaller issues on your site so that they do not become larger problems.

18. Robots.txt Importance: High | Frequency: As needed

Create a robots.txt file using a text editor. Follow the instructions on the official search engine sites concerning writing crawl rules. Put this file in the root domain, then check it to see if it works as you planned. Also, provide a link to your XML site map in the file. Crawl reports should be free of robots.txt errors too.

19. XML Sitemap Importance: High | Frequency: As needed

Make your sitemap according to the most recently updated standards. Submit it to the Google and Bing search consoles. If possible, automate the updates. When new pages publish, rank the URLs in the order of importance. If your site is extensive, consider creating multiple sitemaps. Be on the lookout for errors related to the sitemap in search console reports.

20. Site Security Importance: High | Frequency: Ongoing

Buy and/or install the SSL certificate and complete the migration to HTTPS. The certificate should be renewed before it expires. Regularly check the report on your site to detect any issues with HTTPS. Perform security audits regularly. The CMS and any plugins should be updated regularly.

21. Page Speed Importance: Medium | Frequency: Ongoing

Compress Core Web Vitals Report images. Minify JavaScript, CSS, and HTML files. Turn on Browser Cache. Use a CDN and follow speed report tool recommendations for that page.

22. Page Experience Importance: Medium | Frequency: Ongoing

Check the page experience report for issues. Ensure the design is responsive on all devices. Keep the SSL Certificate active. Eliminate intrusive pop-ups or interstitials. Check the page’s mobile-friendliness and continue to improve Core Web Vitals.

23. Schema Markup Importance: Medium | Frequency: As needed

Add structured data to a page when it is relevant. Use a schema generation tool and then test the markup. After publishing, monitor the markup in your search console.

SEO Analytics

24. SEO Audit Tool Importance: High | Frequency: Ongoing

Regularly run your site through a free SEO audit tool. Review the custom report and fix the most important items first, then to the less important ones.

25. Search Console & Webmaster Tools Importance: High | Frequency: Ongoing

You should have set up both Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and ideally have email alerts set up so you’re notified of errors or significant changes to performance automatically. Keyword performance (rankings, impressions, clicks) should be monitored over time, as should specific reports (Core Web Vitals, etc.) to determine which pages require the most improvement.

26. Web Analytics Platform Importance: High | Frequency: Ongoing

Correct setup of Analytics on Day 1 should occur along with the definition of key (not vanity) conversion metrics. Assess the trends in traffic and engagement as well as the performance and assess the behavior of users to build segments on the traffic source and geographic locations (i.e. user segments). Investigate anomalous behavior as soon as it is detected.

27. Site Crawler Tool Importance: Medium | Frequency: Ongoing

You should hold a recurring, full-site crawl and assess each crawl for broken links and issues with duplicate content and canonicity. Address the most important issues.

Final Word

The checklist should be performed routinely, and the “Ongoing” items should be performed with a regular cadence. The “As needed” items should be performed whenever a post or change has been made. This will allow you to identify most key SEO issues before they impact your performance and traffic.
